Carmelo Pampillonio is an artist and researcher. His work spans sound studies, environmental sciences, investigative journalism, writing, communications technologies, and unique sense-making strategies.
One of his ongoing practices involves repurposing surveillance technologies to develop a planetary-scale communications network in coordination with a number of international institutions, transmitting signals to the Moon that are then reflected back to Earth as a “moonbounce”.
Pampillonio’s research has brought him into collaboration with experts in the fields of infrasound, seismology, engineering, radio astronomy, conspiracy theories, and journalism, and has culminated in a variety of interdisciplinary projects and residencies.
Pampillonio is currently on the Science Advisory Committee of the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI). He is the recipient of numerous residencies and awards, including the Wave Farm Transmission Arts Residency (NY), Pioneer Works Residency (NYC), Elektronmusikstudion Composer Residency (SE), and Titanik-galleria’s A.i.R. programme (FI). His projects have received support from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts (NYC) and Goethe-Institut Deutschland (DE).
Pampillonio has given workshops on subjects ranging from speculative communications infrastructures to experimental music at Pioneer Works and Revolve (NC, US), and contributed to the sonic geographies workshops at Palais de Tokyo as a part of Tomás Saraceno’s ON AIR carte blanche exhibition (Paris, FR).
