Geophysical Reels
Make Noise, 2018
Commission from Make Noise to create a series of Reels formatted for use with their Morphagene microsound music module, which users can manipulate through granular synthesis and other iterative extra-musical processes. Collectively titled “Geophysical Vibrations”, the Reels stand as arrangements composed of documentary-style field captures of natural, suprasensible vibratory forces rendered at the macro-scale and transposed into the sensory range. Through the transduction of seismic wave measurements, Very Low Frequency (VLF) impulses from lightning strikes, amphoric resonances, and the captured electromagnetic fields emitted from the technological instruments involved in the work, the series is an effort to produce a palpable imagining of the relations between the human and the nonhuman, human tempo and deep geologic time. The project also involved the creation of a short documentary where Pampillonio considers the surface of the Earth as a sounding board, and discusses the socio-ecological dimensions of the featured sounds.
